The Annual WKU High Schools Programming Contest 2008
Thursday April 10,2008
Why Join?
This is an excellent opportunity for students to demonstrate
the programming expertise that they have acquired at their local high school. Besides
being a point to be proud of for a resume , for the winners, it gives the student
a fun experience to mingle with others who share a common interest. It is also a
"brag point" for the various schools. In addition there are potential scholarships
available for seniors on the winning team.
Agenda
8:00 - 8:45 Registration & Refreshments (TCCW 137B)
8:00 - 8:45 Computer Warm Ups (TCCW 117)
8:45 - 9:00 Announcements and Instructions (Location TBD)
9:00 - 11:30 Contest (Location TBD) - CS Teacher's Alliance Meeting (TCCW 117)
11:30 - 1:00 Lunch (DUC)
1.00 Awards Ceremony (DUC, room location TBD)
Programming Languages
- Environment: PC's running Windows XP
- Languages: QBASIC, Visual Basic, Visual C++, and Java 2 SDK
- Java editors: JGrasp, JCreator, Eclipse
- Teams may program in any or all of these languages.
- The request for language information on the registration form is to help us assign
teams to labs.
- With the exception of Visual Basic, all programs are expected to be written as console
applications with all code residing in a single file.
- Visual Basic programs:
- Should follow the form of the console applications as much as possible, including
- Labels for the prompts
- Input text boxes for user input
- Submit button to cause the required calculations to be performed
- Labeled text area showing the results
- Since Visual Basic programs are stored in multiple files, those programming in this
language will also be required to zip the form and project files together into a
single archive file for submission.
-
Details of how this is to be done will be made available and demonstrated during
the initiation and practice session.
Submission Guidelines
- At the end of the contest, a summary of the problems that the team wants the judges to consider are marked on the summary form with the exact name of the file for that problem.
- Any special instructions for running that file should be placed on an individual problem submission form
Scoring
- The team solving the most problems is the winner. Each problem is worth 10 point if correct, 0 point in incorrect
- In case of ties, good documentation techniques (e.g. readability, modularity, and documentation) will be used on the solutions to break ties (max 2 points).
Other rules
- A school may have up to 6 teams.
- A team may consist of 1 to 3 students using one computer.
- Teams may bring up to two computer or language reference books.
- Electronic media is not allowed.
- Program listings are not allowed (with the exception of those in the books).
- Teams may also bring non-programmable calculators.
- Scratch paper will be provided, but teams will need to bring pens and/or pencils.
- Teams may not converse with anyone outside of their own team and the programming
contest judges, room monitors, and officials.
- Teams may not converse with their coach during the contest.
Cost
- An entry fee of $25 per team is payable on the day of the contest. Make checks payable
to ACM-Student Chapter.
