TCCW 117 Lab
The Computer Science Department has a wide range of computing facilities. In our
departmental lab, we feature 24 Dell desktop machines. These machines are Dell Optiplex
GX270 featuring Pentium 4 2.80 GHz processors running Windows XP Professional.
We also have an Ultra Enterprise 450 that runs UNIX developmental applications for
the Computer Science students. All Computer Science students receive email and login
accounts on this server. All Western students receive email and login accounts on
mail.wku.edu. Hera serves as a DHCP server, in
addition to housing student email accounts and webpages.
The University features a 100 Mbit/second network connection, which is freely accessible
in our department lab as well as other labs on campus and in the residence halls
on campus. This allows connections to reach speeds more than 100 times faster than
that of a 28.8 kbps modem.

The Artificial Intelligence(AI) Lab
The Artificial Intelligence(AI) Laboratory is designed to be the center where research
and experimentation in the various areas of AI is performed. Currently there are
four Evolution brand ER1 robots there where students explore the robot's capabilities
in the areas of voice recognition, sensor control, and obstacle avoidance . It is
expected that other hardware/software used in other subfields of AI will be housed
here in the near future.

IEB 303 Lab
Just like the TCCW 117 lab, this is an open departmental lab. In this departmental
lab, we feature 20 Dell desktop machines. These machines are Dell Optiplex GX260
or GX 240 featuring Pentium 4 processors running Windows XP Professional. All software
students need for class, assignments, and much more are available in this lab. The
lab is housed in the Industrial Education Building.
STH 209 Lounge
There are a few computers to check e-mail and surf the net, it?s quite there and
a bit or reading is available. Access to a wireless network available (ask the CS
office for network ID and WEP encryption setting). A fridge and a micro wave are
there to help you with keeping lunch cool or warming it up.
The Operating System Lab
The operating systems lab is designed to give students hands-on experience related
to the topics and concepts discussed in the departmental classes related to operating
systems. Computers in that lab are set up to use Window Vista and WinFX. The operating
systems lab is currently housed in STH 215.
The Networking Lab
The networking lab is designed to give students hands-on experience related to the
topics and concepts discussed in the departmental classes related to networking.
It contains a collection of routers, hubs, wireless equipment and workstations.
The networking lab is currently housed in STH 212.
The WKU-Linux Group
The WKU-Linux Users Group was started in 1998 by students on campus who wanted to
promote Linux as an additional operating system choice. Since then, the organization's
membership has reached nearly 100 members, making it one of the larger organizations
on campus.
Linux is a Unix-like operating system that was created by Linus Torvalds in the
early 1990's. It is freely distributable, easy to maintain and customize, and has
become a popular choice for web servers. Most of the programs written for Linux
are also freely distributable among the Linux community.
The group maintains two servers within the department, in addition to personal servers
and servers in other departments. Linux-CS houses the group's website, member accounts,
and FTP information. Big Linux serves as the group's primary FTP server and features
several distributions of Linux in addition to various window managers and other
programs.
Membership in this group is open to everyone, including alumni, faculty, and those
not affiliated with Western.

The Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) Group
The Association of Computing Machinery is an international organization for computing
professionals concerned with the advancement of computer science. ACM maintains
local, professional and student chapters around the world.
This student chapter is charged with furthering computer science student's professional
and social development. To achieve their goals, they bring in speakers, hold social
events, recognize achievement, and try to provide the kinds of services that make
sense for CS people.
Each spring, the faculty selects an Outstanding Sophomore, Junior, and Senior from
the department. Additionally, ACM members select an Outstanding Future Computer
Professional.
This year we are adding membership services: bulk disk purchasing, and a newsletter
highlighting events inside our department. ACM is also responsible for aluminum
can recycling in the CS classrooms and SPS (Society of Physics Students) room.
